Oh, sleep. Sleep is all he wants. But the baby’s cry blows out the heavy fog like a hurricane. He shakes his head. What is this life.
Let her cry. That’s what you’re supposed to do. Let her cry. She has to learn. He has to learn to let her. But it goes on and on. And he just lays there listening, both of them learning.
Eventually she stops and it is quiet again. He turns over and puts an arm around his wife. He tries to sleep but can’t. He lays there in the quiet, wondering if she’ll remember this forever.
